Aycliffe Fell Walking Club (AFWC) have started the 2025 calendar with two cold walks along the Durham Heritage Coast from Castle Eden to Seaham and from Shap to Pooley Bridge in the Eastern Lake District. With over forty walkers on each walk, they were not held back by the cold weather conditions and all managed to negotiate the slippery coast path and then the rough conditions of the routes across to Pooley Bridge.
The club seems to be flourishing in these winter months and on 8th March we travel to the Northumberland Coast to tackle routes from Alnmouth to Seahouses with an inviting add-on of a circular to Bamburgh from Seahouses.
The club is looking very strong for 2025, but always welcomes new members. It is a very friendly club with a hired ‘luxury coach’ taking walkers there and back for only £15 per trip. Even the membership fee is only £10 per calendar year (ie up to December walk regardless of when you join).
Walkers are expected to bring a map and come prepared with good clothing, appropriate for the variable conditions of windy hills and damp moors. Whilst each walker has a duty of care towards their fellow walker, it should be stressed that AFWC is not a ‘led’ walking club and each outing offers a variety of walks and distances.
The full Walks Calendar for 2025 is viewable on the website: aycliffefellwalkingclub.com and the details for each monthly walk are posted soon after the second Saturday of each month.
