It was an honour, as Mayor of our Great town, to attend the Licensing of the Reverend Helen Musson on 7th September at St Elizabeths Church Woodham and to be able to say a few words of welcome. This lovely lady is a great asset and a valuable member of the parish team here in Great Aycliffe
A large part of the Mayor’s role is to attend, on behalf of our town, civic functions in nearby towns representing Great Aycliffe. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet other civic leaders from around the region, raising funds for good causes and promoting our lovely town. Although politics is never traditionally discussed, it is a useful way of making friends, gathering ideas and supporting the wider Northeast region. On Saturday 13th September we attended Spennymoor’s Mayor, Liz Maddison, at home in their town hall and were entertained by Spennymoor Town Band and an excellent opportunity to meet other Mayor’s.
On Tuesday 16th September the Mayoress and I attended the Welcome Café which is held in St Clare’s church hall and were made very welcome by volunteers and attendees. We were served a magnificent meal to celebrate the 4th anniversary of this organisation, which feeds up to 70 people on a Tuesday morning. Congratulations to Brenda Millington and her team on reaching this milestone.
Wednesday evening was a very special full council meeting where I had the honour of presenting Brenda Millington with a community medal and certificate on behalf of Great Aycliffe Town Council for the wonderful work that she does in the community, supported by her volunteers.
The Mayoress and I were invited to join the assembly of Woodham Burn Junior School on 22nd of September, to attend Democracy week, where the school determines members of their school council. I was very pleased and surprised by the knowledge children had of world affairs and the workings of democracy, there are certainly some aspiring councillors studying at the school. I was thrilled to be presented with a school council badge and an honory membership of the school council. It will be my pleasure to entertain school council members in the Council offices soon.
On Friday 26th September I am grateful to accept an invitation to Options group at the PCP to present some certificates to attendees. This fun group is one of the organisations supported by the Mayor’s charity this year and it is always a pleasure to meet them.
Saturday 27th September the Mayoress and I will be attending Ferryhill’s Mayor, Angus Ferguson, at home to support his preferred charities and, oh yes, eat some cake, (it’s a hard life)!
Sunday 28th September will see us representing the council at St Andrews Church for a Hymns and Pimm’s service to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington railway.
