Dear Sir,
I write to honour people, like my dad, who fought with the British 14 Army often called the ‘Forgotten Army’. Honouring the final victory, remembering the forgotten sacrifice they made in the following places: Burma, Singapore, Imphal, Kohima, and the jungles of the Pacific, in the heat and hardship of the Far East, British and Commonwealth soldiers faced the longest and harshest campaigns of WWII.
They fought in silence, often overlooked, yet their courage and endurance brought the final victory and lasting peace to the world.
Eighty years later, on 15th August 2025, the United Kingdom honoured the 80th anniversary of VJ Day remembering the ultimate victory and the sacrifices of those who fought in the shadows of history. I remembered them, including the ones who did not return.
On the morning of the 6th and 9th August the United Sates detonated two atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki marking the end of World War II.
On the 15th August 1945 the Japanese surrendered, and world peace prevailed, now, 80 years on, we were to celebrate, probably the last time we have a chance to do this for our veteran’s.
The disappointment I have with this, is the fact that we have no recognition in the Town, where was our Mayor or other Councillors, Town or County, or the MP? The only Church service was at St. Mary’s RC Church. I have attended a church service on 15th August every year for most of my life.
I was six years old when my dad returned.
Vince Crosby.
