Supportive (Reg. Charity No: 1095388) is launching a new SMART Recovery group in Ferryhill to help local people manage and overcome addictive or compulsive behaviours.

The first session will take place on Friday 23 October 2026 from 2pm to 3pm at Chapter House, 7a Dean & Chapter Industrial Estate, Ferryhill, County Durham, DL17 8LH. Sessions will then continue every Friday.

SMART Recovery is a practical, supportive programme that helps people understand and change unhelpful behaviours. It can support people experiencing difficulties involving alcohol, drugs, gambling or other compulsive behaviours.

The sessions provide a welcoming and non-judgemental space where participants can learn practical tools and develop healthier ways to manage thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Barry Stanley-Wilkinson, CEO at Supportive, said:

“Taking the first step towards recovery can feel daunting, and we want local people to know that support is available close to home. Our new SMART Recovery group will offer a welcoming space where people can build confidence, learn practical skills and take positive steps at their own pace. At Supportive, we believe everyone deserves to feel heard, respected and supported.”

Participants do not need to have attended a SMART Recovery meeting before. No prebooking is required, and participants can turn up to any sessions they want to attend.

The new group will also provide an additional referral option for local GPs, pharmacies, social prescribers, housing providers, charities and other professionals supporting people in Ferryhill and the surrounding communities.

“I am excited to bring the offer of SMART to Ferryhill.” Added Marc Sermanni, Lead Assistant Psychologist. “It is a great opportunity to build a community space focused on acceptance and learning. The team and I look forward to having non-judgemental and open-minded discussions on recovery and wellness behaviours.”

All the meeting Facilitators are expected to follow a Code of Conduct, stick to the SMART approach and always, put the safety of meeting participants first.
