Young people in Newton Aycliffe are being encouraged to make their voices heard by joining the Durham Youth Council, which is now recruiting new members from across County Durham.
The Youth Council provides an opportunity for young people to share their ideas, express their views, and influence decisions about the services, facilities, and opportunities that affect their lives and communities.
Local community representatives have praised the enthusiasm and creativity of Newton Aycliffe’s young residents and are calling on them to represent the town at county level.
“We know Newton Aycliffe is full of talented, caring, and fun-loving young people,” said Cllr Tony Armstrong. “You don’t need any special skills to join – just a willingness to share your thoughts and an interest in how things work in your community. It’s a great chance to meet new friends, learn new things, and have your say about the future of our area.”
Members of the Youth Council meet with other young people from across County Durham – including Peterlee, Consett, Durham City, Bishop Auckland, Spennymoor and Chester-le-Street, to discuss local issues, attend events and celebrate the achievements of young people in the county.
Participation is free of charge, with no exams, tests, or large time commitments required. Members can get involved in projects that interest them and take part in optional visits and social activities throughout the year.
“It’s a friendly, supportive, and enjoyable way to be an ambassador for Newton Aycliffe,” added Tony. “You’ll have fun, build confidence, and maybe even be inspired to become one of our future councillors, helping shape the future of our towns and communities.”
Young people interested in joining are encouraged to speak with their parents or carers and visit the Durham Youth Council website for more information and to complete an application form.
“Show your community spirit, get involved, and make Newton Aycliffe proud,” said Cllr Armstrong. “Together, we can prove that Newton Aycliffe truly is great.”
