Newton Aycliffe Youth FC Under 16 Girls travelled to one of the largest, and most competitive, tournaments for girls from throughout the North of England. A tough group included Scarborough Ladies and local rivals Hartlepool Pools Youth, a draw and a win and the girls topped the group to head into the main cup competition.

Ponteland United, one of the top girls teams from Northumberland, were our opponents in the semi final, both sides had chances but defences were on top. With seconds to go a last ditch tackle from the Ponteland defender took the game to a best of 3 penalty shoot out.

Ponteland went first and the ball slid wide, this left it open for Hattie to score the first penalty followed by Gracie and then Katie to slot the deciding penalty. On to the final for a very close game against another local rival, Shincliffe Girls. Shincliffe created the best chances but couldn’t beat Laila who was outstanding in goal for the full tournament. Once again Aycliffe had a chance to snatch the win in normal time. A free kick 10 yards inside the opposing half was taken by Hattie who launched a shot, as it dipped over the keeper, the ball hit the cross bar and the final whistle was blown. Penalties again, same three girls stepped up. Ponteland hit the post on their second penalty but all three Aycliffe penalties were calmly put away, giving these girls the Trophy and biggest tournament win the team has had since they got together at Under 9.

The girls will now prepare for the coming season as they step up to an Under 18’s premier division in the Russel Foster Youth League.
