Dear Sir,

When it comes to mental health they say it’s good to talk; it’s even better to listen and choose to do something about it. I heard what you said and I’m determined to raise awareness of the need for a women’s support group in the community. Dedicated to provide a safe environment where women can talk, be listened to without being judged and feel confident enough to share their thoughts, fears and concerns on their mental and emotional health and wellbeing.

My childhood provides the motivation to make this a reality but all it takes to help transform someone’s life is the heart, desire and willingness to come together to support those who need our help in the community. This vital and worthy cause has already gained the support of town councillors from all parties and at county level and we have collectively pledged our support to do what we can to make this project a success.

Local business women and Aycliffe Radio show host, Carrie Howarth, along with her co presenter and entertainer, Amy Turner, are already in place to lead the group, as are the facilities, a secure email address and social media page to ensure privacy and confidentiality and create a safe and friendly environment. Positive action works best when it creates positive life changing results so it’s important that as well as providing knowledgeable and experienced people to talk to, activities that promote physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing are also available and an important part of the group’s core values.

Physical conditions are easier to see and so easier to accept, understand and deal with; mental health issues, and the emotional trauma that often accompanies them, is hidden in plain sight and creates a sense of loneliness and isolation. This support group is not designed as a substitute for appropriate professional medical help but prevention is always better than a cure, and sometimes all that’s required is someone to listen. The ‘Sisters of Support’ (SOS) group are there to listen, to understand and, if necessary, signpost the way to additional or specialist support and guidance.

Now there are people at sosna2021@hotmail.com with the necessary and relevant life experience who understand reaching out can be scary, but the journey is always better and safer with someone who knows the way.
