Students in Year 8 have been studying the key features and characteristics of music from China and Japan. They have focussed on the different instrumentation and history of Japanese Meditation Music and Chinese Folk Music before going on to replicate these styles through group compositions and performances. Chinese New Year Celebrations began on 28th January and runs until 15th February and coincided with the students performances. In order to join in the celebrations, students were given the opportunity to taste some Chinese delicacies such as seaweed, prawn crackers and spring rolls whilst investigating and learning about all the ways in which the Chinese people celebrate. Students made some interesting discoveries such as: people are not allowed the sweep their floors, fireworks are set off to chase away evil spirits, red packets containing money are given to the young and unmarried and that 2017 is the year of the Rooster!
