On Monday 10th June, Year 5 (Aycliffe Village Primary) met an astronaut called Michael Foale at the Xcel Centre.

In his presentation, Michael told the schools that he flew six space missions but did not land on the moon. He also went around the world in the Russian space station, Mir, in under 92 minutes. Which is probably one of the fastest times for going around the world!

He showed all the school videos of himself in space with no gravity. In one clip, he had a bottle of water and he proved to everyone there is no gravity in space by tipping the water out – it just floated in thin air!

After the event, Year 5 pupil, Myles said, “I really enjoyed it and it was a brilliant experience. I would like to go to one of his talks again.”

The Year 5 teacher, Mrs Brown said, “I think it is fantastic that the children got to meet an astronaut.”

The organisers, Durham University and Business Durham, hope to have inspired many children to become scientists or astronauts in the future! They certainly inspired Aycliffe Village Primary School.
