in aid of Darlington’s St. Teresa’s Hospice Saturday 5th January 2019

With the collection area including Newton Aycliffe, Newton News forms a vital role in informing literally all households of this very worthwhile operation.

Allow me please to remind you of the background.

1. For the last 8 years, St. Teresa’s Hospice and Darlington Rotary Club have teamed up to collect over 5000 used Christmas trees direct from homes around Darlington and Newton Aycliffe. We then take them to the town’s waste disposal centre for recycling into garden fertiliser topsoil.

2. In return the homeowner donates a small sum – minimum £5 – direct to the Hospice.

And since 2011 Darlington Rotary Club has raised for the Hospice over £36,000.

3. St. Teresa’s is the region’s only, and very highly respected, hospice.

It offers round the clock palliative and end of life care free to hundreds of local residents.

It’s in house, day and at home care facilities are funded largely through voluntary donations, with professional staff assisted by a dedicated 300 strong team of voluntary helpers.

4. This year we hope to mount our most ambitious collection yet. A team of over 60 Rotarian volunteers, armed with 20 large vans – kindly loaned by Darlington’s Drive Vauxhall and Enterprise Car Rentals – is hoping to collect over 1500 trees and raise a further £7500 for the Hospice.

5. “This is a win-win scheme for everyone, with homeowners avoiding mess in their cars and the Hospice receiving much needed funds”, said Rotary organiser David Hayward. “We are particularly grateful to the residents of Newton Aycliffe from whom we hope to collect around 100 trees.”

6. To register your tree for collection and pay online, please go to www.darlingtonhospice.org.uk or phone 01325 254321 before noon on 3rd January.
