Last week Woodham Academy held auditions for their biennial production, Woodham’s Got Talent. Auditions took place over three nights, and were attended by students from across the academy with a variety of acts.
Fifteen places have already been allocated to a mixture of ages right the way through from Year 7 up to Year 11. Acts include singers, a Year 10 band, solo and group dance, gymnastics and instrumentalists. Five further places will be filled on the return after half-term to complete the programme for the final.
The talent show has been a feature of the Performing Arts department’s calendar for a few years now, giving students the opportunity to shine in their own individual talent or skill.
Although music department staff are always on hand to give advice or guidance, this event is primarily led by students themselves, as they are required to fully prepare their own performances, including choreographing their own dances, working together in instrumental ensembles or bands, or simply organising themselves to prepare their act.
The show will even be compèred by Year 11 student Shay Whelan, who will entertain the audience in between acts. Already we have seen some impressive acts, so the final promises to be a thoroughly entertaining evening.  Year 11 finalist Francesca Porritt, a regular performer in Woodham productions, spoke of her experiences:  ‘I particularly enjoy Woodham’s Got Talent, partly because it gives me another chance to perform, but also because there is more variety in the performances.
We can see and perform things that we wouldn’t necessarily have the opportunity to do otherwise’.
Woodham’s Got Talent will take place on Wednesday 12th March, 7pm in Woodham Main Hall. Tickets are priced at £4 for adults and £3 for concessions. For further information or to buy tickets, please contact the Academy on 01325 300328.
