Joe Howarth, a Year 7 student at Woodham Academy, has enjoyed major success in Taekwondo recently. Joe is a very keen, lively student, who is a vital member of the Sports Academy at Woodham; and has been selected in three sporting academies.
Not only is he performing exceptionally well within school and the Sports Academy provision available, but also in his preferred sport of  taekwondo. Having started fighting competitively three years ago, Joe has won medals in all major championships he has entered, winning gold in a regional Chi Open competition, Irish Challenge and finishing 3rd and picking up a bronze medal in the British Taekwondo National Finals in the past two years.
Due to Joe’s performance, attitude and desire to improve he has been selected to be part of the Great Britain Cadet Development Squad, training in Manchester on a monthly basis and attending holiday camps in the school holidays.
Liam Clough, Director of Woodham Sports Academy, said “Joe’s achievement is fantastic. His attitude and desire to improve, in all sport and PE is very refreshing and has already had a major impact within the Sports Academy.
What is extremely pleasing is that Woodham Academy students are now getting national recognition for their sporting talents. Within the Sports Academy we have people competing at regional, national and international level.
This can only be positive for students as it helps raise the bar and creates a challenging environment that can only help breed successful sporting performances.
What makes Joe’s achievement even more impressive is the fact that he is still very young at 11 years old.  The exciting thing is what he will go on to achieve during the next five years”. Everyone at Woodham Academy is exceptionally proud of Joe and all the athletes in the Sports Academy.
