Woodham Community Technology College will be playing host to international and local musicians this July, as part of the ‘Cutting Loose’ Brass Festival. Woodham Music department is working closely with Durham Music Service to offer a range of activities for its students.
On Thursday July 12th, Woodham Instrumental Group will be participating in the ‘Carnival Performance’, which will take place in Newton Aycliffe Shopping Centre. This project means that students are attending several extra rehearsals on top of their existing commitments to the Music department. They are relishing the opportunity to face new challenges and develop their musical skills – such as learning all of their music from memory instead of relying on sheet music, and exploring the genre of street band music.
On the same day, Woodham Technology College will be hosting a visit by American band ‘The Stooges’, who are a well-established brass band from New Orleans. Also as part of the Brass Festival, they will be giving a concert in the morning for Woodham music students and selected students from other schools in the county, which will be a fantastic opportunity for all to experience.
The afternoon’s activities will consist of practical workshops led by the band for talented musicians from key stages 3 and 4, culminating in a joint performance with The Stooges and all participating students. It is a rare opportunity for our young people to benefit from the expertise of professional  musicians, and all are anticipating the event with excitement!
