Recent recipient of the French Legion d’Honeur, John Twigger was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club last week.
The 92 year old related his remarkable life story including his part in the Normandy Landings in the 2nd World War.
He recalled the carnage on the beaches and his work in transporting the wounded to hospital.
John is enjoying his retirement in Newton Aycliffe near his family and was so happy to spend a night with the Rotary Club and thanks them for their kind reception and hospitality.
On the same night, Anna Swabey, the courageous 24 year old Newtonian suffering from a life threatening brain tumour, received a £200 cheque from Rotarian and Consort to the Town Mayor, Michael Dalton.
He brought Anna to the club as a guest speaker recently and the members were overwhelmed by her selfless attitude and fortitude in the face of such a devastating illness.
