A mystery parcel arrived at Newton Press offices last week from the prison for “Long Stay Women” at Peterborough.
The box contained beautiful hand knitted garments for new born children in Africa who are described as “Fish and Chip” babies.
This name comes from the fact that when delivered by the midwife they are wrapped up in newspaper and handed to the mother who, being so poor, rarely has any clothing for her new born child.
Former Councillor, Dorothy Bowman, started an appeal last year and has so far sent over a 1000 knitted vests and hats from Newtonians to keep the babies warm. We can only assume the women prisoners read the appeal in our on-line version of Newton News and decided to help.
We thank them for their fine gesture and assure them their work is much appreciated.
