Dear Sir,

North East campaigners are organising opposition to the Government’s ‘nasty tax’ on spare bedrooms. Aycliffe was built to house young families needing 3 bedrooms and changing social needs require spare rooms for carers, diabilities and children’s visitation rights.

Two bedroom stocks of houses cannot meet demand and one bedroom flats and bungalows do not meet modern day needs and many were demolished for that reason.

It was heart warming to read of Housing Associations planning meetings to represent tenants fears and concerns and campaigners involving MEP’s in defence of their basic human rights.

Alternative accommodation for an aging population to down size is not available. Taxing tenants unable to move is grossly unfair by the Government.

When 1701 people apply for eight jobs in a coffee shop, it shows why the North East tops the list for regional unemployment. Our youngsters cry out for work and this Tory-led Coalition must be challenged by those suffering most from it’s unacceptably unfair actions.

Aycliffe can mount a powerful lobby supporting lawful challenges to the “Bedroom Tax” and could petition our MEP to bring it to the European Parliament. Will Aycliffe do it? I hope so!

Don Fraser, Woodham.
