Fearless fundraisers will brave the blaze and conquer the cold at a Fire & Ice Walk in aid of St Teresa’s Hospice this March. St Teresa’s is seeking brave souls to take on a sponsored challenge which will see them walking over hot embers and broken glass for the Hospice, raising funds in aid of the care and support they provide to people across South Durham and North Yorkshire. Registration is open now for the Fire & Ice Walk, which will take place at the Model T in Mowden, Darlington, on Friday 29th March. Last year 21 people took part in the Hospice’s first ever Firewalk, and this year the challenge is even greater. Among those taking part in 2018 were Hospice staff members Michelle Horner, Julie Cuthbertson, and Sheila Dawson. Supporter Services Manager at the Hospice Michelle Horner said: “It was even better than I expected it to be, and I felt a great sense of achievement.” After a motivational training session which will prepare them mentally for the endurance test, entrants will walk across wood embers burning at over 1000oF and then shards of cold broken glass, all with bare feet without experiencing any pain or injury. Michelle: “The training session beforehand was a great life experience. We all felt like part of a team and we were all proud of each other. Although most of us hadn’t met before we supported each other and felt like we were in it together for a very worthy cause.” The event is supervised by specially trained operatives from organisers Blaze Fire Walking. All participants are asked to donate an entry fee of £20 to complete both walks and try to raise at least £100 for St Teresa’s Hospice. Spectators are welcome to cheer on those taking part.
