A virtual winter fayre has been launched to support Durham’s tourism businesses whilst many remain closed due to Tier 3 regulations.

The free web-based app, created by destination management organisation Visit County Durham, features four themed areas showcasing ideas for getaways and days out to look forward to, Durham-themed gifts and food and drink from local producers. The illustrated markets also feature fun interactive animations.

Michelle Gorman, managing director of Visit County Durham, said: “Durham’s Virtual Winter Fayre is lots of fun and showcases the incredible range of experiences and local businesses we have in the county. But most importantly, it provides support to a sector which has endured its toughest ever year by extending the reach of their own activities and putting them in front of consumers.”

Durham’s Virtual Winter Fayre will be promoted through national marketing activity, providing a vital promotional platform for many of the businesses involved, including accommodation, attractions and award-winning local producers. The fayre also complements a content hub on the destination website, which encourages consumers to support the county’s local businesses.

Allison Raper, owner of Teesdale Cheese, welcomed the opportunity to be part of the app: “To have such engaging and creative ways of getting our products in front of consumers, and reaching a much broader audience than just our own channels, has been a fantastic opportunity for us.”

The online marketplace will be used for more themed virtual fayres during 2021, to continue to support the county’s tourism businesses during the pandemic and beyond.

Cllr Joy Allen, Cabinet member for transformation, culture and tourism at Durham County Council, added: “The county’s visitor economy has been dealt a devastating blow this year, and businesses need support to ensure they can reset and recover once we emerge from the pandemic. As well as showcasing Durham’s fantastic tourism offer, the virtual fayre provides a free promotion platform during the vital festive trading period.”
