Year 5 pupils from Aycliffe Village Primary School, were lucky enough to perform a Snappy Opera at the Gala Theatre in Durham, as part of the Durham Voices Festival. It was called the Magical Music Tree.

The short performance was one of 5 mini operas from various schools throughout the County Durham area. The aim of the event was to introduce opera to children, young people and adults in a fun, interactive and exciting way.

Freya and Mark, from Mahogany Opera Group, worked with the children in school for just 6 hours. They helped their acting skills and singing so that the children could move and sing like the characters in the opera – fish, dodos, unicorns and hunters!

On the day the children spent most of the day at the theatre rehearsing and watching the performances of the other schools.

The show was a sell-out. The auditorium was full of family and friends who thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Mr and Mrs Shaw (parents) said, “The performance was excellent.”

New Head Teacher, Mrs Sutherland was very proud of the children.

The children themselves also said that they had enjoyed the experience of performing on stage and hoped that they would have the opportunity to do something similar again in the future.
