Ron Hogg, Durham’s Police and Crime Commissioner welcomes plans to give victims the right to challenge the Crown Prosecution Service when it decides to abandon a prosecution or not charge a suspect.

The new policy took effect on Wednesday 5 June although it doesn’t include cases where the police have decided to take no further action. Mr Hogg said: “Putting victims at the heart of what we do is vital and I have focussed on this in my Police and Crime Plan.

“If victims are given the confidence they will have a voice when their case goes through the Criminal Justice System, this should help other victims to come forward to report a crime against them. I believe that this is a step in the right direction for victims of crime”.
