Dear Editor Whilst out with my dog on Friday evening 29th July, my Collie suffered an unprovoked and vicious attack from an Alsatian in Oakfield. I was on my way home with my dog on his leash and was about 50 yards away from my house when the Alsatian, out on the green with its owners spotted my dog and immediately charged over and attacked him, grabbing him by the back leg and pinning him down. My poor dog didn’t stand a chance, even if he could have fought back as he was on his leash. The dog had him wedged up against a fence so he couldn’t move and he is no match size wise or aggression wise to an alsatian. When the owner managed to get hold of the dog he put it in the house and then came to see if my dog was injured and to give the gentleman credit, he was very apologetic and very concerned. Luckily, with my dog being a collie he has a really thick coat which reduced the attack but he was terrified and shaken. If this attack had taken place on a smaller dog it would most definitely have been seriously injured if not worse. Worse still, it could have been a child that was attacked or myself whilst trying to get my dog away. The owner said their dog had never done this before and in future it will be kept on the leash, but my concern is I know for a fact this dog frequently escapes from their garden. There is a possibility it may have gone for other dogs before. My dog was in pain and I too was in extreme pain throughout the weekend, caused by trying to fend this dog off which caused a flare up of Fibromyalgia. As a result my poor dog is nervous when walking in this area and I too am extremely nervous in case this happens again and would advise people to be on their guard. Name & address supplied
