To support learning in GCSE Chemistry and  to let students see a range of engineering roles in practice, some of our Y10 students visited Lucite Speciality Polymers over the last fortnight.  Students enjoyed a tour around the site, looking at the stages involved in turning the monomers into the finished polymer.

The products seen included the glue for the back of plasters and bone cement.  Students also visited the Quality Control lab and the Research and Development lab, where they were able to see how Chemistry is used to design new polymers to meet the requirements of the customer, and how every batch is checked to make sure it meets the required standards.

Student James Fry said “It’s good to see the different parts of engineering and to compare it to other visits to other companies who make different things”, and Alex Paterson said “It was unique to see all of the different roles inside such a small factory”. A big thank you to Lucite for being such great hosts.
