A UTC South Durham Sixth Form student has just landed a Level 4 Apprenticeship with Bechtel, one of the most respected global engineering, construction, and project management companies in the country.

Miles, from Barnard Castle County Durham, will be working on High Speed Rail 2. The apprenticeship is for an Associate Project Manager role and will see the student not only applying his engineering knowledge but also learning about managing a large scale project. Miles secured the apprenticeship after competing against hundreds of other applicants who had all applied for the opportunity.

Miles is the first student of his year group to secure his next step toward his future career for this academic year. Miles said, “I have been applying for a wide variety of different apprenticeships as I know how competitive they are to secure, but this opportunity to work for such a large scale project was one that I couldn’t refuse. The UTC have helped me hugely to develop my skills and confidence.”

Miles will be studying his apprenticeship course at the National College of High Speed Rail, in Birmingham, starting in September this year. Although Miles will be working on HS2, joining Bechtel means that other opportunities within the company will open up to him and he could end up working for the company on projects all over the world.

Cherakee Bradley, Careers Leader at UTC South Durham said, “We work so closely with our students to ensure that they are given the skills they need to write their CV’s, applications and understand how to present themselves. It is part of what sets us apart as a UTC.

Cherakee added, “All of our Post 16 students went on to achieve positive destinations last academic year so we are aiming for the same high standard again this year. We are so thrilled for Miles, he is an exceptional student who will excel in this role.”

UTC South Durham is based in Aycliffe Business Park and opened in September 2016 founded by regional employers, Hitachi Rail EU and Gestamp Tallent in collaboration with University of Sunderland.

Applications for year 10 and year 12 studies for a specialist engineering and technical education at UTC are currently open, and booking for the next open evening is available on the UTC South Durham website: www.utcsouthdurham.org – For additional information call 01325 430 250.
