Two local residents lost their lives following a one-vehicle accident in Newton Aycliffe on Monday 1st April. Roads were closed and traffic was diverted as emergency services attended the incident.

Pat Metcalfe, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her son Gary was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. He died five days later after life support was withdrawn.

The vehicle left the road and crashed into trees near the junction of School Aycliffe Lane and Horndale Avenue. It is thought that Mrs. Metcalfe had suddenly taken ill and lost control of the car.

Pat Metcalfe was an early resident of Newton Aycliffe, having moved to the new town in 1950. Relatives wish to express their gratitude to emergency services and to the staff at James Cook University Hospital.

Funeral details to be announced shortly.
