With two town council by-elections on 4th May, Aycliffe Labour Party has selected two dynamic local candidates, who promise to be a breath of fresh air.
In West Ward, Labour’s candidate is Simon Hocking, who’s hoping to gain your support and inject some energy into our stagnant town council. Simon was born, bred and lives in Aycliffe. He started his career as an apprentice on the industrial estate and is now an automotive engineer for the biggest car manufacturer in the region, using his commercial skills to manage complex projects.
Simon had this to say about the current state of the council: “This is a chance to pass the torch onto a new generation of councillor in our town. The council’s been run by the same old faces for too long – it’s time for change. I want to use my business skills and experience to make sure the council delivers for us as residents. I’ll push for a new approach that makes the town council relevant again.”
Gareth Wright is Labour’s candidate for Byerley Park, Horndale and Cobblers Hall ward. Gareth leads retrofit and energy efficiency projects for a large North East social housing provider, where he’s at the forefront of helping residents through the cost of living crisis.
With a background in environmental services and time spent as a secondary school teacher, Gareth wants to inject some youth and vibrancy into the town council.
“Since moving here in 2020 from Bishop Auckland, following the birth of my son, Aycliffe’s welcomed me and my family with open arms. I’m incredibly proud to call this town my home. In my day job I work hard every day to protect our communities from fuel poverty and rising bills. I want to make sure the town council delivers better value for money for us as taxpayers and does more to improve the area.”
Polling day is Thursday 4th May. This is an opportunity to give the town council the fresh start it badly needs.
