CAVOS held its 4th annual Christmas Party and awards ceremony at the Shildon Civic Hall last Thursday when three Aycliffe groups figured prominently for special excellence in the work of local voluntary groups. Gillian Fortune, CAVOS and Chief Officer made the presentations to five organisations in total.

Ron Mitchie received a Special Award for Excellence on behalf of the Agnew Community Centre in recognition of their provision of solar panels, construction of a fenced outdoor play area and the setting up of a disability sports club as well as other initiatives during the year.

Ian Wiggett received a Special Award for Excellence on behalf of the Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society in recognition of the the renewal of their museum accreditation status, the completion of their 1958 ex United coach restoration and the average of 4,500 hours per year put in by the volunteers over the last three years.

The top award for Outstanding Organisation of the Year was given to the Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre for the work by the management committee of the Centre in bringing the centre to its current high quality of operational standards and to their forward plan which should take the Centre into the next five years with confidence. This award was received by Vince Crosby on behalf of the Trustees.Gillian Fortune wound up the award ceremony by telling the audience that changes were to take place with CAVOS and that new arrangements were to be implemented by Durham County Council in the New Year. A very pleasant evening was rounded off by a hot buffet and a disco.
