Last year a small number of Syrian families, fleeing from their war torn country, settled in Newton Aycliffe and have made new homes and friends here. They have taken every opportunity to mix in and be part of the community and anyone who lives near them know how open and welcoming they are with invites for tea or a  meal. The children have started school and college, with the parents attending classes and joining local community groups. On July 20th myself and Martin Carter were invited to a wonderful  open afternoon held in the Youth and Community Centre with lots of laughter and lovely Syrian food. The event was their way of saying thank you to those who have helped in the process of these families relocating to Newton Aycliffe. I am sure as time goes on the friendships already made will grow stronger and new ones begin. The families are already proving to be valuable members of our town.
