Last month children from Stephenson Way Academy and Nursery School were busy raising money to donate to Macmillan Cancer Support, with the final total confirmed at over £1000. As well as hosting a coffee day, the children learnt why it is important to support charities and how donations of time and money are used. The event was organised and run by Y6 pupils and they fulfilled many roles to ensure the day was a success.
The work of Macmillan is now an integral part of the Y6 curriculum and children have benefitted from learning about how and why it is important to offer support to others. Key learning tasks linked to the day included formulating adverts, generating fund raising ideas and planning an event.
Throughout the coffee day parents enjoyed hot or cold drinks and had the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of cakes; the majority of which were donated by staff members or parents. The event was extremely well supported and visitors gave generously to the charity. To ensure the day ran smoothly, the Y6 children were on hand to greet visitors and help serve cakes and drinks to other children.
In addition to the cakes and coffee on offer, the pupils ran a stall selling fresh produce which they had grown themselves in the school’s new garden area. The children also held a competition where guests were invited to guess how many coffee beans were in the jar.
