Students at Woodham Academy had a visitor on Wednesday 15th January from Hair and Beauty Industry Training Ltd. The focus of the visit was to show students how languages are important to the world of business.
Brenda Allan has spent her career working in the fashion industry and currently trains budding hairdressers, engineers and business admin apprentices.
Her varied career has seen her living all over the world and attending internationally recognised fashion events such as Fashion Week in Paris, London and Milan.Students learnt how Brenda used her linguistic skills to lead teams of staff from a variety of different countries, communicating in English, French and German.
The event was a real eye–opener for our young people who had no idea that languages would be needed within a career such as fashion. John Coley, Head of Languages Department said, ‘At Woodham Academy we strive to give our young people the best opportunities to progress and this event supports our new initiative to use language in real life situations’.
The school used the ‘Inspiring the Futures’ service to find Brenda. This service sees people from all sectors and professions volunteering to visit schools and colleges to talk about their job, careers path and route they took into employment.
