In a series of lessons, Year 9 Health and Social Care students at Woodham Academy have been learning about the importance of effective communication in healthcare.
In a scenario, based on an elderly gentleman having an accident, and working alongside health professionals, students had to identify problems created by ineffective communication and then make suggestions on how communication skills could be improved and how they might affect the patients’ health outcome.
The students have also completed their Basic Life Support skills training. They have all enjoyed working with David Cummings an Intensive Care Staff Nurse and Carole Joyce an Occupational Health specialist, on Basic Life Support, and were all successful in passing their skills test.
During the test the students had to demonstrate what to do in an emergency, how to react in an emergency and how to work as part of a team delivering potentially lifesaving support.
