Year 7 and 8 students from Woodham Academy took part in the UKMT Junior Maths Challenge. Over 250,000 pupils from across the UK sat the Challenge exam with roughly the top 6% receiving a golf certificate, the next 13% silver and the next 21% bronze. Woodham Academy students achieved 8 gold, 4 silver and 13 bronze awards. Winners of the Gold award in Year 7 and 8 were; Nathan Lawton, Charlie Pemberton, Callum Fielden, Richie Steward, Andrew Blair, Joseph Capstack, Emilie Dunn and Jake Mendelsohn. Charlie, a Year 7 student was also best in his year and Callum, a Year 8 student was best in his year and best in the school overall with his maths challenge results. Winners of the silver award for Year 7 and 8 were; Angel Woods, Michael Taylor, Owen Lister and Max Turner. Last but not least winners of the bronze award in Year 7 and 8 were; Caitlin Kavanagh, Jak Kennedy, Liam Luck, Jay McWilliam, Chloe Paterson, Kieran Pearson, Joe Richardson, Bonscott Alan, Katie Cooper, Curtis Shaw, Erin Towler, Hannah Urwin and Zak Winter. The challenge involved a combination of maths trivia designed to test the students and push them to think outside of the box. Further to the UKMT Maths Challenge, the top 2% of high achievers are invited to take part in the Kangaroo Challenge. Three Year 8 students, Callum Fielden, Richie Steward and Andrew Blair were asked to take part. The students did exceptionally well to achieve such a result and then go on to the further maths challenge. Callum Fielden received a Merit certificate for his results in the Kangaroo Challenge meaning he is within the top 0.5% of everyone that took part in both challenges nationally. A truly outstanding achievement. UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge 2016 Various pupils from year 9 and year 10 from Woodham Academy achieved 1 silver and 7 bronzes in this year’s UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. Silver Year 10 Conor Gibson-Walker (Best in Year and Best in School) Bronze Year 10 Kate Reynoldson Joseph Fawcett David Burniston Courtney Teasdale Bronze Year 9 Jackson Cooper Christopher Jones Aaliyah Smallwood Foster Masterclass celebration From the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge, the UK Mathematics Trust invited Woodham Academy students; Conor Gibson-Walker and Jackson Cooper, to attend a Masterclass celebration event in Newcastle at the Northumbria University on the 16th July. This event is organised by Think Physics and Northumbria University, in conjunction with the Royal Institution Masterclass team. This includes workshops and activities in mathematics and engineering as well as a keynote talk from Professor Danielle George, 2014 Royal Institution’s Christmas Lecturer, for a ‘Hack your home’ special.
