Learn more about the wartime adventures of Aubrey Herbert in free, family friendly storytelling sessions at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Wednesday October 26. Storyteller Rob Temple will share the story of partially blind, part time diplomat, linguist and MP Aubrey Herbert. Aubrey Herbert was halfbrother to the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, and had his home at Highclere Castle. Having been refused military service due to his poor eyesight, he nonetheless managed to get hold of a soldiers uniform, then waited outside Wellington Barracks, watched a regiment leave for the Front and, to use his words, “fell into step behind them”. He wasn’t discovered until the regiment made it to France. The storytelling piece will focus on his early adventures in the war, his ride on the train to Dover from London, and his subsequent wounding and partial journey back to Blighty on an Ambulance Train. Storytelling sessions will take place at 11am, 1pm and 3pm with no need to book, just come along and join in! The National Railway Museum at Shildon is open daily from 10am to 5pm, and parking and admission are free of charge. For more information, please call 01388 777999.
