On Tuesday 10th May and Wednesday 11th May 2022, Year 5 from Stephenson Way Academy and Nursery volunteered to take part in a student organised litter pick. We decided to organise this because during our geography lesson we learned about the impacts on earth when people litter.
Two year 5 girls, Olivia and Miyah, were shocked at how much rubbish there was around Newton Aycliffe. Because of that, they decided to organise a litter pick for the whole of year 5. Olivia and Miyah wrote a letter to Steve Cooper from Great Aycliffe Council saying that they wanted to do a little pick and help our environment.
Steve Cooper told us about the effects littering can cause on our environment. Some of the effects are that animals can get badly injured and plants can die out due to the polluted air. One class went on a litter pick around Woodham Burn. When they did this they picked up several bags of rubbish. Some of the unusual things they found included: a broken chair, two scooters and a lot of different other things.
Steve kindly donated some litter pickers to our school so we can continue to keep our school grounds tidy, and get rid of the litter that blows onto our playground. We are all looking forward to using them!
We hope that other people follow after our actions and help provide a better environment for us all. Thank you for reading our article.
