St. Michael’s Church, Heighington are planning to hold a History Day on Saturday 2nd April 2022. The day will be held in church and, as well as hearing about the fascinating history of the building and churchyard, there will also be a session on village history and some of the older houses/buildings.
The day will begin at 10am with coffee/tea, a welcome and introductions by Revd. Lissa Scott and at 10.30am the official opening by the Mayor of Darlington, Cyndi Hughes. We are also hoping to have with us, Paul Howell MP, and local historian and journalist, Chris Lloyd. Following the opening, we start with a Brief History of Heighington, by Frank Haylett with a break around 12noon for a light lunch. Then there will be a tour of some of the interesting headstones in the churchyard, weather permitting (the lunch and tour will be in two groups and overlap to enable manageable numbers). The afternoon session will concentrate on church history and artefacts within. Proceedings should be complete by 2.30pm to include time for questions and a photo opportunity.
The day will be of interest to local and family history groups and our newer (and older) residents who wish to learn about the community in which they live. The cost will be £12.50 per person including refreshments/lunch and any funds raised will go to St. Michael’s Church Building Maintenance Fund. Please access tickets (limited to 50) via the online ticketing service Eventbrite using this link https://bit.ly/3s11KME or ring/email Andrew Maxwell on 07923 302191, andrew@andrewmaxwell.plus.com
