St John’s School and Sixth Form College are staging the first major exhibition of their students art and photography work.  The exhibition will be displayed at Bishop Auckland Town Hall’s Tom McGuinness Gallery.  The gallery provides the ideal atmosphere to display a wide range of works of art from students in Year 11 and 6th Form students.  Overall the exhibition will contain over 150 pieces of work.  The first, opening to the public on March 10th will contain the work of Year 11 students and the following exhibition opening on the 24th March will profile the work of the Sixth Form students.
The exhibits reflect the breadth of approach taken within the department with work that explores both traditional and contemporary practice. The nature of the work is also very personal and clearly displays a philosophy that places the student, their feelings, their experiences and their love of art at the centre of the creative processes. This open ended and exploratory approach has resulted in a highly diverse range of outcomes that demonstrate skill, creativity and contextual understanding.
In addition to the exhibition being a celebration of students’ excellence, it also offers an opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work and enthusiasm of Mark Rossi, the current Head of Art.  Mark has worked in the Art department for 40 years and will retire this year.  As an acknowledgement of Mark’s great contribution an award entitled “The Rossi Prize” will be given to the exhibit voted to be the public’s favourite work of Art.
Please feel free to come along and experience some wonderful art and cast your vote in the “ Rossi Prize 2014!
