Newton Aycliffe’s fast racer Scarlet Dunn showed her sporting versatility last weekend by not only racing at Wombwell kart circuit’s ‘W plate’ meeting, but also competing at the Institute of Sport in Sheffield as a ‘Flyer’ as part of Aycliffe Dance Academy’s entry to the ‘Gateway to the Galaxy’ Cheerleading Competition!
In the cheerleading competition on Saturday the ‘Academy Starbursts’ team racked up an impressive 89.74% placing them in the highly fought competition against many dedicated cheerleading troupes.
Due to her competing in the cheerleading competition on the Saturday, Scarlet missed Free Practice at Wombwell but she produced another competitive display in the Bambino Comer karts at the Barnsley circuit. Although it was her first turn of the wheel there for a month – Scarlet put in a great effort to immediately put herself in 5th position against a large field of 17 competitors, including some of the country’s fastest racers.
In the heats she took 5th, 8th and 7th places giving her 7th on the grid for the final. In the final she made a good overtake to jump up to 6th and then had a great race long battle nose-to-tail throughout. Although she could not find a way past, she set the 3rd fastest lap time and a personal best lap time by half a second.
Scarlet was cheered on at both events by her family including younger brother Harrison – who is also practicing in karts to go racing.
She would like to thank her team, Amaron racing, for running her, and also to sponsor Johnson Land allowing her to compete in the number of events she is this year. She races again at local track Teesside Autodrome in 2 weekends time.
Scarlet and Mam Amanda – who was a racing driver and performance driving instructor herself – featured on Aycliffe Radio’s live sports show on Tuesday 14th May at 6.00pm. The show is repeated on Sunday 19th at 12noon – visit www.ayclifferadio.co.uk to listen.
