Last week 120 students from four local secondary schools took part in a School Games Qualifying competition. Year 7 and Year 8 boys and girls were competing for the chance to represent their area at the County Durham School Games Finals at the Louisa Centre in March 2020.

Athletes took part in field events including Long Jump, Triple Jump, Vertical Jump, Speed Bounce and Shot Putt. Then they competed in a series of running races including sprints and a variety of relay races. Schools competing included Sedgefield Community College, Greenfield Community College, Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College (winners of the Year 7 Boys competition and joint winners of the Year 7 Girls competition) plus Whitworth Park Academy (winners of the Year 8 Boys and Girls competitions plus joint winners of the Year 7 Girls competition).

There was a great atmosphere and students produced some fantastic performances as well as an excellent sporting attitude. What was great to see was the vast majority of the athletes competing had also represented their primary schools in previous competitions over the last few years.

Pupils from Byerley Park, Woodham Burn, Stephenson Way and Sugar Hill primary schools were all represented and we wish the winning teams all the best of luck in the County Finals next year.
