Counc. John Robinson, Chairman of the Trustees of The County of Durham School Benevolent Fund, received a cheque for £1,060 from Jane Katsambis of Newton Aycliffe, (right)President of Soroptimist International Durham.
The Headteacher of Thornhill Primary School, Mrs Green was also present. It is thanks to Mrs Green and Mrs Overfield, Bursar; that this fund continues to be administered at the school on behalf of the Trustees.
The fund provides grants to parents in County Durham who are struggling financially and have children at school. Those who are in receipt of certain benefits can apply for £35 for a pair of shoes and £35 for a coat for each child.
Since her retirement five years ago and after over twenty years in primary school headship; Mrs Katsambis has been committed with other likeminded women within S I Durham; to supporting other women in the world. Both her chosen charities this year reflect her high regard for parents, children and their needs. One has been The Aarohi Project, in the Himalayas where funds raised will pay a teacher’s wage for one year; the second being within Durham.
As she puts it . . .
‘During my working life here in this wonderful part of the world, I was aware that women particularly, are often the ones who struggle to make ends meet – should they pay bills, buy food or new shoes for their child? The Schools Benevolent Fund offers much needed support to families who are finding it tough. Shoes that fit and warm coats help pupils to be prepared for the day ahead. Self-esteem and self-confidence are more likely to be high and learning more effective.’
Contributions towards this excellent fund either from schools or the public are always gratefully received and should be sent to, The Bursar, Thornhill Primary School, Shildon, Co Durham. DL5 1ES
