Leaflets to guide you on walks along the region’s limestone landscape have been launched this week.
The Geotrail guides detail how the rocks and fossils, some dating as far back as 300 million years ago, were formed and have since influenced the area’s natural habitats, industry and lives of local people from South Shields to Hartlepool. They also include ancient sand dunes and coastal reefs.
The work on this project has been led by Groundwork NE & Cumbria and funded by Limestone Landscapes Partnership, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
The five walks are:
Souter to Marsden Bay – ‘Cliffs, quarries and mills’
Sunderland City – ‘Rock in the City’
Tunstall Hills – ‘On top of a tropical reef’
Seaham Nose’s Point – ‘Cliffs, caves and curious rocks’
Coxhoe – ‘Coal, clay and quarries’
The guides are available in public and community buildings and can be downloaded from www.limestonelandscapes.info. For more information please contact Groundwork NE & Cumbria (North Durham Office) 01207 524 803.
