Newton Aycliffe Rotarian John Burrows had a hair-raising experience at this week’s club meeting when he volunteered to have his head, eyebrows and trademark-beard shaved for charity.
Traditional Turkish barber, Emre Sahin, based at the Blue Bridge Centre in Newton Aycliffe, put the finishing touches to the Macmillan Cancer Support fundraiser by swapping his electric razor for an extremely sharp cut-throat.
“No wonder Macmillan call it the “Brave the Shave” campaign”, quipped John when Emre removed the last few whiskers.
For retired housing association director John, it was the second occasion on which he had lost his hair for a worthy cause.
Twelve years ago, he had his head shaved to raise funds for the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle as a thank you for the cancer treatment given to his great-nephew.

Footnote: John, a former president of Newton Aycliffe Rotary Club who lives in Bradbury, caused a burst of laughter at the end of the evening when he won a prize in the weekly raffle – a tube of anti-dandruff shampoo!
