On Wednesday 12th August, during the summer holidays Woodham Burn Out of School Club visited Newton Aycliffe Fire Station. Jim and Adam were our tour guides showing us around the station, explaining what their duties are and what the team do on shift. Jim was kind enough to call head office in Durham so that we could see how they receive an emergency call out.
After looking around inside the station we went into the car park so that Jim and Adam could show us each section of the fire engine, which the children were very excited about. After showing us all the different equipment and explaining what it was used for the children had the opportunity to sit inside the fire engine whilst Jim and Adam explained about the breathing apparatus and the gadgets in the front.
After listening carefully to all of the information each child had a squirt of the hose, some aiming it as high as they could, with Adam’s help.
During the visit we were also lucky enough to be shown around the new purpose built unit where the fire officers stay when on long 24 hour shifts, this included a tour around the living room, kitchen, dining room.
Before leaving Jim reminded the children about the importance of having smoke alarms in their homes and checking them weekly. He also explained to the children that if they didn’t have smoke alarms in their homes their parents/carers just need to contact their local fire brigade and they will fit them for free.
The children had a wonderful time and everyone from the School Club send a huge thank you to Jim and Adam for such an enjoyable and educational visit. If you would like to find out more information about the club please contact 300080 or email woodhamburnoutofschool@gmail.com
