Framwellgate School in Durham has a long history of talented music students. In the 70’s, there was an amazing brass band in the school, with some really talented musicians, which was led by teacher Neil Davies.

Stephen Smart, who was an original member of this band, has decided to team up with his fellow band mates to celebrate the glory days of the FMCS School Band back in the 70’s, raising funds for both the music department at Framwellgate School Durham and Spennymoor Town Band, who will perform alongside the school’s own wind band. There is also an opportunity for some students to play side-by-side with the excellent Spennymoor Town Band.

Stephen is a freelance French Horn player, living in the South of England. He said “My first taste of playing the French horn was in Framwellgate Moor Comprehensive School Brass Band as it was known in those days. Music for me, like everyone else in the world, is of huge importance in life. Music bonds people together, develops team work, encourages commitment and dedication as well as enhancing social and communication skills for students to use throughout their life. Through the technological age we live in now, I’ve managed to get in touch with several of my fellow band members and we were all keen to stage this concert to raise funds for music in the school. We cannot think of a better way of doing this than by getting back together and playing again.”

Stephen has performed with many of the country’s leading orchestras including Welsh National Opera, BBC, London Concert Orchestra, London Gala Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Bournemouth Symphony, City of London Sinfonia, at venues including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Symphony Hall Birmingham, KKL Luzerne, and Royal Opera House Covent Garden.

Tickets for the event will be £5 each. Refreshments will be available during the interval. The event will be held on Wednesday 23rd October 2019 7pm, at Framwellgate School, Newton Drive, Framwellgate Moor, Durham.
