Bishop Auckland Rugby Club are recruiting for their boys U12 rugby team. They are seeking year 7 boys who were under the age of 12yrs on August 31st last year, 2020, but who can also be 12 years of age now. Due to the impact of Covid imposed restrictions the successful team were unable to recruit when a number of players moved on or had to leave due to family commitments. Now, as Covid restrictions are eased allowing for a structured and safe return to rugby, team coach John Walker is keen to recruit as many potential players as possible for the team. “It does not matter if you have never played rugby before or have limited experience. We have experienced, qualified coaches to teach players the skills and knowledge needed to play and enjoy the game in a safe environment” he says.
Players will learn the core values of rugby as they play and learn, these are Respect, Teamwork, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. All important values that will help see them through their development into adulthood and throughout their lives. Rugby helps develop fitness, social skills and can have a positive impact on a young persons academic success as well as making friends for life.
One of Bishops many success stories is that of local boy, from Coundon, Alec Clarey, who started his rugby career as a young teenager at the club. Alec went on to represent Durham County in his age group and represented England in their U18s team, going on to University as a result of his rugby opportunities. While at University he played for England Students then turned professional. Playing for several clubs, including living and playing in Jersey, he was recently signed by one of the worlds top Rugby clubs, Saracens, where he plays and trains, alongside top England International and British Lions players such as Maro Itoje and Jamie George.
