The street collections with Santa has ended and we have thoroughly enjoyed this year’s tour. The weather has been kind, even a sprinkling of snow on a couple of evenings made it more festive, complementing the illuminated sleigh, Santa, Mrs Claus and their helpers.

This is a long-standing tradition with the Rotary Club and we know that many residents look forward to seeing us each year. Hopefully we bring a little joy to people over this festive occasion, not only to the children but to the wider community and especially those that may be a little lonely at this time of year.

Obviously we collect and this year we have had a remarkable response highlighting the generosity of our community. As always, some of the proceeds help pay for Christmas Hampers for those in our community who are less fortunate, whilst the remainder will go towards local charities and schools.

We must however apologise for the collection around Silkin Way and Westmorland Way. Despite pre-checks, for the first time in the history of these collections, there was a technical problem with the music system that could not be repaired. We noted your disappointment on Facebook and it will be sorted for next year.

Currently we are in Tesco’s collecting for the same cause and on occasions, Santa will be paying the store a visit.

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Newton Aycliffe, we would like to wish everyone the season’s greetings, a happy and peaceful New Year and a sincere thank you for all of your support. Merry Christmas.
