DURHAM Constabulary is celebrating after securing a regional award for the way it looks after its employees. The force has been given a bronze award in the North East Better Health at Work Award. The scheme recognises the efforts of local employers in addressing health issues within the workplace. Durham Constabulary has implemented a number of initiatives, campaigns and training programmes aimed at improving the workforce’s physical and emotional wellbeing. Some of those have included free Check4Life health screenings, a cycle to work scheme, healthy eating awareness, mental health awareness training plus many others.

Judith Clewlow, Head of HR at Durham Constabulary, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement to get this award and to be recognised in this way. “We truly believe that Regional Award for Durham Constabulary our people are our most important asset. “It is therefore vital that we give them all the help and support possible to ensure they are fit, happy and healthy to take on the challenges they face every day.” Judges for the award said: “The work the constabulary has done around raising awareness of mental health and promoting a positive environment where staff feel able to talk openly is commendable. “Durham Constabulary understands that mental health should not be addressed in isolation and have linked this to other areas of health and wellbeing including healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, financial wellbeing and alcohol and drug awareness. “The support available to staff through procedures and signposting demonstrates examples of best practice which we would encourage be shared with other organisations.”
