Town Centre Manager Bryan Haldane, told Newton News this week that the work in the town centre is going very well and on schedule.

He apologises for any inconvenience to traders and shoppers, thanking them for their patience. The new staircase to Upper Beveridge Way is now open and work on demolishing the ramp is planned to take place when the replacement ramp is erected.

As a temporary arrangement the small car park opposite the stairs to the Leisure Centre on Greenwell Road is to be restricted to parking for disabled people. More details in Newton News later.

Cafe Pronto at the top of the ramp is moving into the old Post Office (Julies Pet Shop) premises. Work has started ready for the Cafe to open during the first week in May.

The former bank premises opposite the new Cafe Pronto site is being converted to retail premises with office space available on the upper floor.

A reader asked whether the new pedestrian area would affect the number of stalls on Market Day. Bryan has given an assurance that the 49 market places offered at Aycliffe would remain unchanged.

The wall at Aldi, preventing access to the town centre from the multi storey car park is still under consideration and is not ruled out for removal is good news for those peole who would find it useful and more convenient to get to shops through this point.
