On 9th January 2016 Bishop Auckland Rotary Club teamed up with Butterwick Hospice volunteers to collect the many real Christmas Trees in the area to recycle for residents whom had donated to the Butterwick Hospice in order to use this service.
Throughout December leaflets advertising the recycling scheme were available from various outlets selling real trees, Bill Robson, from the Rotary Club said, “We would like to thank those businesses in the area that agreed to hand out leaflets for us which detailed how you could have your tree collected and recycled as well as Graham Holmes and Son whom provided a van for the day. This is a great way to save you trying to dispose of your tree yourself and supporting a great cause. Those outlets were; Tesco, Asda, B & Q, Homebase, Beech Tree Nurseries, Windlestone Nurseries, Toronto Allotments, Peel Street Warehouse, Oliver’s Units, Low Etherley, Harry’s Farm & Raby Castle.”
Helen Kirby from Butterwick Hospice said “we hope this scheme grows year on year, this was our second year in partnership with Bishop Auckland Rotary and we have already seen an increase in bookings for tree collections. Special thanks must go to the collectors were Ian Clark, Butterwick Volunteer & John Yeomans, Tony Sanderson, Bill Robson, Keith Black Bishop Auckland Rotary Club and Robbie Izat ( San Jose, Evergreen Rotary Club). I would also like to thank Bishop FM for also supporting the scheme and inviting us on air to talk about it.”
We hope to run the recycling scheme again next year.
