A lucky County Durham resident is celebrating after she became this May’s winner in a scheme aimed at encouraging people to recycle.

The scheme, which is entirely funded by central government and private company Valpak Ltd, was launched in November and is being run in five local authority areas in the North East.
Durham County Council is promoting the scheme inCountyDurham, which is specifically aimed at encouraging people to recycle glass jars and aerosols.
Sandra said: “Everyone should recycle as much as they can as there aren’t enough places to send our waste to.”
Vicky Bell, waste strategy and policy officer at Durham County Council, added: “We want to encourage County Durham residents to recycle as much of their waste as possible so that we can reduce the amount sent to landfill.
“This campaign, which is specifically aimed at reminding people to recycle their glass jars and aerosols, offers an excellent incentive for people do their bit.”
