Greenfield Community College and Queen Elizabeth 6th Form have teamed up to create a series of house challenges at Greenfield.  The challenges test student’s logic, musical maths and quick fire maths but also build on their team work, confidence and numeracy.

The challenges were devised by Mrs McKie from Greenfield and Helen Greaves from QE, with students from both Greenfield and QE helping to lead the event. This was a great opportunity for Greenfield students to see previous Greenfield students who are now studying A-level maths at QE in action.

The challenges were specifically designed to allow students of all abilities and ages to access the questions but to give students a chance to feel the excitement of maths and use the subject outside of the traditional classroom setting.  Another aim of the project is to raise the profile of maths around the school and show students that they can do functional maths.

During the activity on Monday students enjoyed working as vertical teams with all ages and abilities represented in each group.  There was a real buzz in the room throughout the activity which became electric in the final speed round when teams raced each other to the finish.

Headteacher, Mr Priestley said about the challenge “This is a wonderful opportunity to involve the whole school, working with ex students, to enjoy the challenge of maths. This is part of our wider Time 4 Success programme which supports all our students to exceed their expectations.”

Monday’s challenge involved Green house but the challenge will be completed by all six houses at Greenfield. We look forward to finding out the winner in the next couple of weeks, and seeing the students continue to be excited about Maths!
