Ian Doig of Broomlee Close remembers the Olympic Torch relayed through Great Britain in 1948 when he was just 12 years old. He was a member of the Boys Brigade in Leven, Scotland and was on parade until 11pm in pouring rain when the torchbearer passed through his town.
Ian did his National Service at RAF Holton and at Christmas Island where they tested the Atom Bomb. He returned home to marry Christina who unfortuantely now resides in a Shildon Care Home. They came to live in Newton Aycliffe after Ian got a job with Wilsons Forge in Bishop Auckland. He later worked for Eatons before retiring due to ill health. He was able to see the Olympic Torch again, 64 years later, at Emerson Way and was quite amazed by the number of people who turned out.
